520 _aRubber nanocomposites filled with layered 2D materials as graphene nanoflakes (GNf) have a promising future and the conditions to produce these elastomeric nanocomposites are still being explored. Considering the current status, no studies have been undertaken to unravel the exfoliation and dispersion of GNf in rubber compounds reinforced with silica. In the present research, some of the challenges in processing rubber composites with GNf are discussed. Silica and GNf filled styrene butadiene copolymer rubber and polybutadiene rubber nanocomposites were prepared using two different procedures. In the first procedure, graphene was pre-dispersed in oil and sonification was applied, this mixture was then added to the rubber compound in a closed mixing chamber. In the second procedure, GNf were added directly into the rubber compounds processed in a closed mixing chamber equipped with a double interconnect rotor where, (1) time of GNf shearing, (2) order of GNf addition (before and after silanisation), and (3) GNf content were considered. Pertaining to the different mixtures produced, cure, physical, mechanical, and electrical properties were evaluated, revealing challenges in obtaining good properties with nanofillers which demand for exfoliation and good dispersion in the elastomeric matrix.
