520 _aStock plants for young buddings are raised in polythene bags toachieve vigorous growth for early budding and minimize root damage at planting. The use of polybags and frequent application of fertilizer in liquid form, contributes to the vigorous and uniform growth in young buddings. The diameter of the stock plant at bud grafting showed a highly significant positive correlation (r=0.90932,p=0.0001) with the growth of the scion at field planting. The correlation between the stock and scion diameter at the time of field planting was also significant (r=o.91580, p=0.001). The diameter of the scion shoot after six months of field planting was also correlated (r=0.23175, p=0.001) with the diameter of the stock at bud grafting.
