245 0 _aImprovement of quality of natural rubber (cis-polyisoprene) by suitable chemical treatments
260 _bNational Symposium on Impact of Chemistry on Life and Society, 1 to 3 October 2004, Department of Chemistry, Tripura University, West Tripura, India. pp.72.
520 _aNatural rubber (NR), a polymer of cis-isoprene, is obtained from the latex, a colloid, extracted from rubber plant (Hevea brasiliensis). NR is an important raw material for rubber based industries. The quality of raw rubber effects the quality and durability of products. The quality of NR can be improved by suitable chemical treatment in different steps of processing of latex. The state of Tripura produces substantial quantities of NR. There are facilities to process latex to produce sheet rubber, a dry form of natural rubber. Different types of chemicals viz anticoagulants, coagulants, sodium bisulphite and paranitrophenol are used in processing sheets. The preserved latex concentrate is also being produced by centrifugation with suitable preservative system in one processing unit run by TFDPC in south Tripura. The use of ammonia as preservative in this process has manifold advantages. The superior quality raw materials can fetch better price. The suitable chemical treatment on latex during processing to produce superior quality sheet rubber and preserved latex concentrate, the importance of use of chemicals and the market demand of the different grades are discussed.
