520			_aThis paper considers the problems and potential for the introduction of low intensity tapping systems (LITS) in the smallholders sector. A major constraint is that over 80;of the smallholders sector consists of scattered individual holdings. Further, at the time of replanting, with the current stands there was no necessity to give any consideration for clones which respond to low intensity tapping systems. With the current labour shortage experienced and with higher remunaration to be earned by the tapper, LITS may be attractive to smallholders. However a number of considerations are essential. These include the need for:* a change in tapping intervals from d/2 to d/6 over a period of time; initially to d/3, then to d/4 etc,* some system of subsidy or loan as the equipment involves an initial investment of RM800/ha. A concerted, coordinated and dedicated input by the relevant agencies to ensure successful adoption of LITS by smallholders is urgently needed.
