520 _aEarly selection of Hevea in the Cote dIvoire is in 2 stages designated CES (seedling evaluation field) and CCPE (grafted clone field). It is based on genotypic selection, which is theoretically superior to mass selection, and is described under the following headings: genetic selection of Hevea in the Cote dIvoire; principles of genotypic selection; and analysis of data from CES and CCPE (selection at the level of CES in 1989 (CES89); selection at the level of CES in 1991 (CES91); study of relations between CES and CCPE (the case of CES75; the case of CES81; and the case of CES84). Selection showed some effectiveness for yield but was ineffective for growth in the CES. The results suggested reducing the intensity of selection in the CES and systamatically adopting a family structure for selection in the CCPE.
