520 _aWood of the rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex Adr. de Juss.) Muell. Arg., has, of late, assumed considerable importance as a raw material suitable in industrial field. It is known that the wood is highly susceptible to sap stain fungi and insects. Our knowledge of the resistance of wood against decay fungi is meagre. A study was made to understand its durability and behaviour against seven decay fungi- Lanzites trabea, Fomes annosus, Chaetomium globosum, Ceratocystis ulmi, Polyporus meliae, P. versicolor and P. hirsutus. Results indicated that (a) the resistance of rubber wood against different fungi was was relatively different, and (b) rubber wood has least natural resistance to attack by some of the common tropical decay fungi.
