Following the Rubber Board's Replanting Subsidy Scheme(RSS) of 1957, there has been a spurt in the rubber area expansion. Assuming an annual average replanting area to be 4000 ha., the availability of rubberwood has been estimated to be 28 million Cft (0.79 million cu.m) per annum. Based on the assumption that a tree would yield 60 per cent of the stemwood (roundwood) and 40 percent of branchwood, the availability of stemwood and branchwood works out to be 17 million Cft (0.48 cu.m) and 11 milliom Cft (0.31 cu.m) respectively. The rubberwood is being mainly utilised by the sawmilling industry for manufacturing packing cases as evident from the periodic surveys. There is a bright future for rubberwood in the light of the shrinking tree cover, if efforts are made to convert rubberwood into quality wood by more and more value addition. | ||
