At present it is being mainly used as fire wood, packing case, match veneers, splints etc. But rubber wood, after proper chemical treatment, provides equal strength and durability of any semi hard wood available in India and will be cheaper and, therefore, has immense potential for better utilisation. The treatment process involves an initial prophylactic treatment with NaPCP followed by chemical impregnation with Cu-Cr-As composition/Boron compounds and kiln seasoning to a moisture content of 10;. The paper focusses attention on an integrated modern approach during preservation of rubber wood and its successful utilisation based on the practical experience of the author. Rubber wood can be considered almost as a renewable crop and a valuable source of timber. Since latex is the main source of income from rubber tree, it has to be replanted after an economic life of around 30 years. The paper discusses the scope of utilising chemical-impregnated kiln seasoned rubber wood for manufacturing useful articles like door and window components, furniture, wall panelling, parquet flooring, interior decoration, tool handles, etc. The paper provides the general and characteristic properties of processed rubber wood and a comparative evaluation with conventional timbers. It also focusses attention on the steps to be taken to promote treated rubber wood and to make a public awareness about its various applications. The successful utilization of rubber wood depends on its effective preservation and processing. Preservation of timber assumes a very important part in conservation of forest. Wider utilisation of processed rubber wood will spare naturally durable conventional timbers. So the utilisation of processed rubber wood will indirectly help to conserve our national forest wealth and thereby maintain ecological balance. | ||
