In vitro propagation of plantation tree crops

By: Contributor(s): Material type: TextTextPublication details: Proceedings of the International Planters Conference 17-20 May 2000. p131-143 (Reprint)Subject(s): Summary: OIOs purpose-built tissue culture laboratory was set up in early 1987 primarily for research and development and commercial production of oil palm clones using tissue culture technique. Special features such as adjustable temperature and light intensities were included in the design of the culture rooms. This has allowed the diversification of in vitro propagation to other plantation crops such as banana and Sentang, as well as sub-temperate ornamental species and Oncidium orchid. Scaling up for commercial production and sales of banana and most of the ornamental species had been carried out. For oil palm, large scale propagation of elite palms using an improved protocol via somatic embryogenesis pathway for field planting is currently underway. A protocol for in vitro propagation of Sentang had been developed. Rooted plantlets had been produced and field planted.
