Production of particleboard using undebarked natural rubber wood and other agricultural wastes

By: Material type: TextTextPublication details: In: Proceedings of the National Conference on Industrial Utilisation of Natural Rubber(Hevea brasiliensis)Seed, Latex and Wood, 22-24 January 1985, Rubber Research Institute of Nigeria, Iyanomo. pp.243-248. 1985Subject(s): Summary: Particleboards were prepared from the combination of unbarked rubber wood, wood shaving, mangrove bark, corn cob and sugar cane bagasse, by treating with adhesives based on vegetable tannins. Results from mechanical and various physical tests, showed on an average, that the bending strength (modulus of rupture) of boards made of 25;undebarked rubber chips were about 30;higher than those of the commercial grade and boards of other ligno cellulosic materials. Additionally, the specific gravity, weight to strength ratio (specific strength), water resistance and swelling ratio of the rubber based boards were better and showed better esthetical property. Although no nail fastness tests was carried out, all boards showed evidence of being nailed and sawed.
