Environmental management in concentrated latex factory: A case study in Southern Thailand
Material type:
TextPublication details: Proceedings : Indonesian Rubber Conference and IRRDB symposiun 2000 Indonesian Rubber Research Institute, Bogor, Indonesia, 12-14 September 2000.V.II. pp.314-322.Subject(s): Summary: Num Rubber & Latex Co, Ltd is a medium scale industry, which is located in Southern Thailand with a production capacity of 8,000 metric tons/year of concentrated latex and 400 metric tons/year of Skim Block. Initially this industry faced problens with wastewater treatment like odor release from process section. This industry was closed for a number of times due to complaints from neighborhood during the last few years. This paper discusses about the successful solutions developed to tackle the pollution problems in each section of this factory. Initially the wastewater treatment system was a combination of anaerobic and aerobic ponds. To control the odor problem from the wastewater treatment plant, combination of anaerobic and aerobic ponds system is replaced by the aerated lagoon system. The modified treatment plant has not only helped in controlling the odor problem, but also helped in reducing the area of wastewater treatment plant with little investment for the modification. The replacement of wind guides in centrifuge machine has helped in controlling the ammonia odor problem in the centrifuge room and in the reduction of electricity consumption by the centrifuge machine. The reduction of ammonia percentage in the field latex has helped in pollution control by ammonia and reduction of acid consumption in the skim processing. The reduction of acid consumption in the skim processing has helped in reducing the sulfate content in wastewater generated from the skim processing. The change in practice of ammonia solution preparation helped in reducing the ammonia evaporation from tanks.
