Development of compatibilized styrene butadiene rubber hybrid nanocomposites containing different organoclays and carbon black

By: Contributor(s): Material type: TextTextPublication details: Rubber India 2013Description: 70-78Subject(s): Summary: Emulsion polymerized styrene butadiene rubber based nanocomposites containing dual filler(organoclay and carbonblack (CB)) were fabricated by the both solution intercalation and melt compounding methods. To disperse the different organoclay finely in the bulk rubber matrix, primarily the oil extended styrene butadiene rubber/organoclay (XSBR/ Cloisite (XC)) composites were prepaires by solution intercalaton and ultimately the different XC composites and CB were directly incorporated into the bulk E-SBR by melt blending technique in a laboratory scale open two roll mixing mill. XSBR acts as a compatibilizer between the polar organoclay and the nonpolar E-SBR in the present study. Wide angle X-ray diffraction analysis (WAXD) and high resolution transmission electron microscopic (HR-TEM) analysis of the nanocomposites reveal that the organoclay were intercalated and delaminated in the XSBR matrix and for the E-SBR compounds, the organoclay platelets were were partially exfoliated in the bulk rubber in presence of CB. Different organoclay located E-SBR compounds slow overall improvement in all the properties such as curing features, mechanical, thermal and dynamic mechanical properties compared to their respective controls. Among the three different composites based on Cloisite 15A, 20A and 30B, Cloisite 30B filled E-SBR compound in the presence of CB show superior properties.
