Wind damage : the possibilities of an integrated research for improving the prevention of risks and the resistance of clones in the rubber tree

By: Contributor(s): Material type: TextTextPublication details: IRRDB symposium on physiological and molecular aspects of the breeding of Hevea brasiliensis 6-7 November 1995 1995Description: 182-199Subject(s): Summary: In both Africa and Asia, rubber stands are subject to periodic damage to uprooting or branch or trunk breakage which can considerably reduce the economic lifespan of the plots and hence the profitability. At the end of the selection process, the breeder is often confronted with the necessity of discarding some high yielding clones because of their sensitivity to wind damage. This paper presents a recall of previous research and ideas on this subject with a number of observations made on rubber trees in Cote dIvoire together with a review of some studies carried out on wind and forests (mainly conifers) in temperate arreas. In so doing, it is hoped these will help to develop further multidisciplinary researches so as to improve the prediction and prevention of risks in rubber trees.
