In particular, the effect of pH has been observed. It is found that stable equilibrium films can form when an aqueous solution is squeezed between rubber/glass and rubber/rubber contacts. The separating film thickness depends on pH. The thickest, most stable films were associated with natural rubber and the thinnest, least stable, with its synthetic equivalent. The presence of naturally occurring substances other than rubber hydrocarbon may be responsible for the thicker films found with natural rubber ER -
