There was significant variation for rootstock effects and general combining ability (GCA), specific combining ability (SCA) and reciprocal effects of clonal combinations of rootstock and scion. The variance due to SCA was higher than the variance due to GCA thus suggesting wide scale determination of clonal compatibility to identify the best clonal rootstock for specific clones. Two of the clones, RRIM 600 and GT 1, proved to be good rootstock clones that will produce high budding success in combination with a wide range of clones. There was a high SCA effect between GT 1 and PB 28/59 which are primary clones. This is an indication of a close genetic relationship between the two clones which can be confirmed in subsequent studies ER -
