N2 - Wood of Hevea brasiliensis (rubber) was chemically modified by three anhydrides namely acetic anhydride, maleic anhydride and phthalic anhydride. Modified wood showed improved dimensional stability and less hygroscopicity. Among the three anhydrides acetic anhydride was found to be most effective in imparting dimensional stability and consistent Anti Swelling Efficiency (ASE) under repeated cycles of wetting and drying. FTIR spectra obtained from modified wood indicated reduction of hydroxyl groups associated with wood constituent polymers accompanied by an increasing intensity of the C=0 and C-O stretching bonds. The reaction was maximum in the samples treated with acetic anhydride ER -
