Wintering pattern in certain new generation clones of Hevea brasiliensis

Rubber is a deciduous tree winters annually, from December to February. Wintering varies with genotype, age, climatic conditions etc., this may extent up to the onset of drought. Wintering pattern is crucial for the breeders to determine flowering synchrony of potential parental clones as well as incidence/escape of powdery mildew attack, which affects young rubber leaves, buds, inflorescence and other immature terminal tissues reducing rubber latex yields considerably. Present study was carried out in new genotypes under testing from two statistically designed trial populations of 50 clones. Clones were originated from either half-sibs or hybrids including four reference clones. Five clones (514, 690, 575, 844, 843) in trial I population were identified with exceptional early wintering of 77 to 88 percentage and disease escape. Late wintering by the clone 848 having 32 percentage of leaf shedding was observed during the month of December to February. The check clone (RRII 429) registered 76 percentage of wintering during the same period. Whereas in the trial II, early wintering rate was observed in clone 276 with 95 percentage leaf shedding, followed by clones 178, 337, 355, 489 and RRII 414 indicating clonal variability for this trait, usefulness in future breeding programs and powdery mildew disease management caused by Oidium
