Material type:
TextPublication details: Wood News 2005Description: 36-42Subject(s): Summary: There has been a growing interest in India especially since the early 1990s towards commercial utilisation of rubberwood with a surge in the number of registered rubberwood processing units. The number of processing units with pressure impregnation and kiln drying treatment facilities has increased from 50 units during 1994-95 (Viswanathan et al., 2000) to 84 units by 2002 with a regional concentration in Kerala, as the state accounts for 86 per cent of the rubber planted area in India. Moreover, the statutory laws, which prohibit transportation of rubberwood logs outside the state as well as the need for prophylactic treatment of the raw material within the stipulated time, are the important reasons for the regional concentration. In this backdrop, this paper attempts to provide an overview of the current status and performance of rubberwood processing industry.
