Preparation and characterisation of epoxidised natural rubber from low nitrogen latex
Material type:
TextPublication details: Papers presented at IRRDB seminar 5-8 November 1996 Sri Lanka p36Subject(s): Summary: Low Nitrogen Centrifuged Latex (LNCL), Depolymerised Centrifuged Latex (DCL) and Positex of medium to high DRC (20-42;) were stabilized with vulcastab LW and subjected to epoxidation below 20 C and at room temperature using preformed acetic acid. Isoprene units ranging from 20-75;could be successfully epoxidised using low nitrogen latices. Epoxidation proceeds rapidly and effectively reaching to pure ENR i.e. without ring opened products, as characterized by NMR and FTIR spectroscopy. Latex stabilized with a cationic surfactant, Centrimide (Positex) was coagulated during the reaction. The matured rubber coagulam thus obtained showed presence of ring opened products such as hydroxyles, ketones and furan products. The three lattices LNCL, DCL and positex were reacted with performic acid prepared insitu and the epoxy content reached upto 50;in maximum of 24 hrs showing and efficient epoxidation. Positex coagulated after 3hrs and maximum epoxy content obtained was 50;.
