Availability of rubberwood resource in Peninsular Malaysia

By: Contributor(s): Material type: TextTextPublication details: Rubberwood Processing and Utilization, Malaysia, 1994; p7-15 1994Subject(s): Summary: The decline in the projected supply of rubberwood is the consequence of landuse changes from rubber to other crops, during the mid 1980's. The trend is likely to continue due to the recent policy of promoting structural change in the economy from agriculture to manufacturing. The estimate for 1990-2017 shows that the supply of rubberwood logs will not be able to meet the demand. However, factors like improving utilisation and product diversification could overcome the situation to some extent. In that respect, it is important to note the current proportion of rubberwood utilization as sawlogs. A rigid assumption of very low net volume usefuul as sawlogs or veneer logs results in a greater portion of rubberwood resource being suitable for othre uses. Unless more factories are established to absorb this residual for the manufacturing of other wood products, the amount of resource wasted will be tremendous.
