Drying rubber timber with solar heat
Material type:
TextPublication details: Chinese Journal of Tropical Crops 1986Description: 74Subject(s): Summary: An experiment was carried out to probe into the feasibility of drying treated rubber timber with solar heat. The results showed that 5-cm wide and 3-cm thick rubber timber could be treated in a solar kiln to bring down its moisture content from the initial 74;to 18;(the equilibrium moisture content of wood in Hainan Island) within seven days, and 2-cm thick timber could lower its moisture from 50;to 18;also within seven days when treated with solar energy, 20-25 days shorter than time required for air drying. The cost of solar kiln treatment is about 10.11 yuan/m3, more than 50;lower than that of a conventional kiln, and the quality of the rubber timber thus treated is good with little drying defect. A disadvantage of the solar kiln is that the drying operation is limited by weather.
