Summary, etc The protein allergy issue, associated with some natural rubber latex-dipped medical device, has caused certain concern over the use of NR dry rubber products. A study was therefore carried out to evaluate a number of the commercially available dry rubber grades, both raw and vulcanized, and some dry rubber products. Their extractable protein contents, shown to be related to the allergenicity of the products. Their extractable protein contents, shown to be related to the allergenicity of the products, were measured by the RRIM modified Lowry method, while their allergen activities, if any, were assessed by both the skin-prick test and the RAST-inhibition test. Results revealeed that NR dry rubbers and dry rubber products have not only extremely low extractable protein contents (often <20mg/g), but also very low or negligible allergenicity. Hence, it may be concluded that dry rubbers and dry products are generally not affected by the protein allergy problem.
