Summary, etc Wood represents a reich source of potential nutrients to a wide variety of insects and fungi of particular concern to the timber users is the attractiveness of wood to insects and fungi. Preservation of wood means to make wood unattractive to wood destroying agencies, either by making poisonous or by making repellant. There is no doubt that wood is the most ancient material for construction and preservation of wood started 4000 years ago. Historically preservative treatment of wood using pressure or vacuum starated in 1838 by John Bethell who invented the famous Bethell process which is relevant even now. Further development of various chemical preservatives, their current status and future trends and environmental implications are briefly dealt in this paper.
