Summary, etc The objective of good tapping always should be to get as much crop as possible from trees with minimum excision of bark and with lowest interference with health of trees and their capacity for sustainable rubber production. Due to high frequency of tapping and associated incidence of Tapping Panel Dryness, economic life is restricted to 13-15 years. Majority of the growers are exploiting crop from 2 virgin basal panels and then slaughter tap for 2-3 years. Whereas the estates are following medium frequency, due to tapping cost and overheads, the present day price is much lower than their cost of production. The way out for rubber grower is to make his product more cost effective. Optimum dose of a ethepon, a common yield stimulant can help in realizing crop from trees under lower frequency tapping with third or fourth daily or weekly tapping. An experiment was laid out to compare the performance of mini and reduced spiral cuts under d/3 frequency of tapping in clone RRII 105, the Indian Wonder Clone, with different frequencies of stimulation. Cut length of various treatments was 1/2S, 1/3S, 1.4S, 1/4SS/R with 10 cm and mini with 5 cm. The actual tapping intensity under all the treatments are substantially lowers than the recommended practice, 1/2S, d/3, 6d/7 (55;). Ethepon at 2.5;a.i. is applied on freshly tapped panel as per the schedule. Dry Rubber Yield, dry rubber content(drc), TPD incidence and annual girth increment are the parameters monitored. Yield obtained from 5 cm mini cut was 81 per cent of the control (half spiral cut). Reduced spiral cuts of 10 cm; 1/4S and 1/3S gave significantly higher yield (10-32;) than control. In all treatments drc was higher than that of control. This indicates better vigor of the plants with short tapping cuts. This is further evidenced by higher girth increment and low incidence of Tapping Panel Dryness. Depending on the length of the tapping cut, by adopting short tapping cuts, the size of the tapping task can be increase to 500 trees from the present task of 300 trees with significant reduction in direct cost(tapping).
