Summary, etc Abnormal leaf fall caused by Phytophthora spp. is the most destructive disease of rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) in the traditional rubber growing areas. Many of the high yielding clones of rubber are highly susceptible to this disease. Chemical control has been adopted to control the disease in the field. The repeated fungicides spray may lead to environmental pollution. The resistancein plants is brought about by contritutive and induced mechanisms. Biocontrol measures are not yet practiced for the management of this disease in rubbe plantations as they were not proved effective. Bacterial endophytes colonize the internal tissues of plants and help them by increasing stress tolerance (abiotic and biotic) and promoting plant growth. In this study, isolation and selection of endophytic bacteria were made from different parts of rubber that exhibit significant antagonism against P. meadii. Population of endophytic bacteria in H. brasiliensis was estimated and was found to be more in roots than petiols and leaves. Out of 252 morphologically different endophytic bacterial isolates of H. brasiliensis from five different locations, 42 showed in vitro antagonism against P. meadii, the pathogen causing various diseases in rubber. These isolates caused suppression of P. meadii with mycelial inhibition ranging from 15;to 62.5;. (AIL-4, AIP-1, A2L-4 and EIL-2). Six isolates that showed more than 50;inhibition against P. meadii were selected a nd the antagonists were identifide as Pseudomonas sp. and Alcaligenes sp. through 16S rDNA sequence. The antagonistic compound from the Alcaligenes sp. EIL-2 from the culture filtrate was characterized as Phenazine-1-carboxylic acid through GC-MS and further structural characterization of the compound was made by FT-IR and NMR. The purified compound at 5 ppm concentration totally inhibited P. meadii in vitro.
