Summary, etc Timber is a versatile material having numerous advantages over other substances and plays a key role in every human activity. As population increased and necessities of man shot up, more and more timber was consumed resulting in large scale exploitation of our forest wealth and mother nature. In view of the urgency to arrest the ecological decay and the limited availability of durable species of timber, effective utilization of less durable species of timber is not only relevant but also inevitable. Rubber wood is and under-utilised non-conventional timber in India. Rubber is a renewable crop and a valuable source of timber which is available in abundant quantity. The paper focuses on the significance of timber in modem times and the scope of better utilization of rubber wood, based on the practical experience of the author. Rubber wood after proper chemical treatment provides equal strength and durability of any semi-hard wood available in India and can be used for the manufacture of useful articles like door and window components, furniture, wall panelling, parquet flooring, interior decoration, tool handles etc. The treatment with NaPCP follwed by chemical impregnation with CCA/Boron compounds and kiln seasoning to 10 per cent moisture content. The paper stresses the need to make a public awareness about its various applications. It also emphasises the the fact that better utilization of rubber wood as a cost effective alternative and dependable source of timber and its wider utilization will indirectly help to conserve our national forest wealth and help to maintain ecological balance.
