Summary, etc The reasons for the choice of the B compounds borax and boric acid for the chemical treatment of rubber wood in Malaysia are explained and 2 methods of treatment for timber are evaluated. Boron compounds give rubber wood a good protection against insect pests. They are non-toxic and do not affect the colour of the timber. They are fairly common chemicals, easily available at reasonable prices. Treatment by pressure impregnation is more effective and faster than by dip diffusion, the former requiring only a few hours to achieve complete penetration while the latter needs a few weeks. A simple spot test for determining the presence of B compounds in sawn timber is described.
