520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc More than 100 Hevea genotypes grown in Rubber Research Institute of Malaysia and Golden Hope Plantations Berhad were selected and evaluated for their potential as timber cultivars. The parameters used in the evaluation excercise were clear bole volume, canopy wood volume and secondary characteristics such as vigour, trunk appearance and resistance to wind damage and major leaf diseases. Among the 24-year old clones from six Hevea species evaluated, H. guianensis HHB 20A/5 had the highest clear bole volume at 1.77 m3 per tree. The others with good clear bole volume were H. guianensis HHB 20A/3, H. pauciflora HHB 12/3, HHB 12/4 and H. nitida HHB 7/1 and HHB 8/1. These clones have straight and smooth trunk with clear bole height ranging from 5.8 to 8.9 m. In view of their relatively high wood yield but poor latex yield, these species are only suitable for establishing plantations which are meant for timber production. Several 13-year-old Hevea seedlings from 1981 Hevea Germplams Collection also showed promise as timber species. Among the genotypes with clear bole volume of more than 1.0 m3 per tree were AC/F/6A-36/1, RO/OP/4-20/125, AC/S/5-21/89, RO/A/7-25/588, AC/S/10-37/93, AC/T/4-13/84, MT/IT/18-13/125, AC/F/5-21/197 and AC/F/21-64/221. The clear bole height for these genotypes ranged from 6.27 to 13.0 m with the majaority of the seedlings having strong, straight and smooth trunks. The seedlings have been cloned and are presently being tested in the Small Scale Clone Trials. Assessments of the RRIM 900 series clones show that there are several fast growing clones which have potential for timber production as well as latex yield. These clones are RRIM 908, RRIM 910, RRIM 912, RRIM 913, RRIM 918, RRIM 921, RRIM 922, RRIM 928, RRIM 929, RRIM 931, RRIM 932 and RRIM 936. Twenty-two year old trees o these clones exhibited relatively high clear bole volume exceeding 0.5 m3 per tree. Thus, they could be considered as potential planting materials for the production of both latex and timber. The promising Prang Besar (PB) clones which are also suitable for timber and latex production are PB 235, PB 260, PB 350, PB 355 and PB 359. These clones, at ages ranging from 19 to 26 years in trials, exhibited clear bole volume ranging from 0.33 to 0.93 m3 per tree. From the newly selected clones of the RRIM 2000 series, eight clones have been identified as showing potential for both latex and timber production. These are RRIM 2001, RRIM 2002, RRIM 2008, RRIM 2009, RRIM 2014, RRIM 2015, RRIM 2016 and RRIM 2020. The clear bole volume for 17-year-old plant of RRIM 2001 and RRIM 2002 were 0.41 and 0.44 m3 per tree respectively. Clones RRIM 2008, RRIM 2009, RRIM 2014, RRIM 2015, RRIM 2016 and RRIM 2020 at 14 years of age have clear bole volume per tree of 0.33 m3, 0.34 m3, 0.53 m3, 0.43 m3, 0.43 m3 and 0.36 m3 respectively. The mean rubber yields of these clones over the first five years of tapping were also considered to be high and ranged from 71.7 to 101.8 g per tree per tapping. Based on trial records and measurements, the genotypes mentioned above have potential as a resource for timber. However, their growth performance in high-density planting and under different environment with the rubber forest concept needs further evaluation before a recommendation for wide scale planting could be made.
