Strength properties and used of certain plantation grown timbers from southern India

By: Contributor(s): Material type: TextTextPublication details: The Proceedings of National Seminar on Processing and utilisation of Plantation Timbers and Bamboo, July 23-24 1998, IPIRTI, Bangalore, pp. 250-254. 1998Summary: Plantations of several fast growing species have been raised on a large scale in different parts of the country. Some of these plantations are basically meant to reduce the pressure on already over exploited forest trees to meet the demand of fuel wood, wood based industries like paper, panel products, construction joinery and furniture and other specialized uses. Studies on strength properties of seeral plantation timbers have been carried out at the Institute of Wood Science and technology to find the suitability of some of thses plantation woods as alaternate to different primary/conventional timbers. The results of work carried out on differnt species are presented in this paper. The species tested for strength properties are: Acacia aruriculaeformis, Cupressus goveniana, Dalbergia sissoo, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Hevea brasiliensis, Maesopsis eminii, Morus alba and Swietenia mahagoni.
