Reinforcement of silicone rubber with precipitated amorphous white silica nanofiller: Effect of silica aggregates on the rubber properties

By: Contributor(s): Material type: TextTextPublication details: Journal of Rubber Research 2006Description: 140-158Subject(s): Summary: Silicone rubbers often possess poor mechanical properties and must be reinforced with fillers such as synthetic silicas for industrial applications. The effect of up to 60 parts per hundred rubber by weight precipitated amorphous white silica nanofiller on the properties of a peroxidecured polydimethyl siloxane rubber was studied. The rubber also contained a small amount of vinyl groups. The mechanical properties of the rubber vulcanisate were enhanced noticeably when the filler was added. This was mainly due to a strong filler-filler interaction which produced large silica aggregates in the rubber. The addition of the filler was also beneficial to the crosslink density of the rubber.
