TextPublication details: In: Abstracts of Papers: First National Seminar on Rubber Wood, 12 December 1989, Rubber Research Institute of India, Kottayam, Kerala, India, pp. 2-3. 1989Subject(s): Summary: The paper attempts to evaluate the production and consumption of rubber wood by 2000 AD and also to quantify the monthly variation in the production of rubber wood. The data were collected from the registration records of the Rubber Board, from a large scale survey of rubber wood consuming units in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, etc and also by interviewing about 100 Junior Field Officers and Field Officers of the Rubber Board. The study shows that by the end of 2000 AD the production of rubber wood in India will be 1.7 million m3. Currently rubber wood is consumed in packing case (0.43 m.m3), plywood (0.08 m.m3), safety matches -both splints and veneers (0.08 m.m3), furniture (0.01 m.m3) and other uses (0.01 m.m3). The current production of rubber wood is placed at 1.2 m.m3, of which, 60;is stem wood and 40;branch wood. This shows that out of the 0.72 m.m3 of stem wood available only 0.61 m.m3 is being consumed in the industrial sector. Presumably the balance is consumed as firewood and for other domestic uses. It was found that 80;of annual production was available during the period January to June every year. Of these March to May accounted for 60;of the annual production. By 2000 AD the consumption of rubber wood in packing cases, safety matches and plywood is estimated to be 0.82, 0.16 and 0.16 m.m3 respectively. This estimate is based on the assumption that there will be a 6;increase in industrial production in India per year. There is also a possibility that the composition of rubber wood consuming industry can change. Rubber wood will be used more and more as building materials and for furniture. Technology is likely to be developed in India to use rubber wood in paper and rayon pulp. There will also be increased use of rubber wood in plywood and safety match indusries. Rubber wood may be used to manufacture activated carbon. There will also likely to be a decline in the use of rubber wood as packing cases.
